Some restaurants inspire reviews. Ours apparently inspired a band.
Hungry Songs is the debut album by Boil Me Gently, a musical project born around the tables, kitchen sounds and very serious appetites of Restaurant Relax in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
The band describes its music as Gastro Folk Cabaret — a questionable but surprisingly accurate mix of folk, cabaret, humor and an unreasonable interest in Polish food.
There are songs about pierogi. Songs about soup. Songs about gołąbki. There are moments of love, longing, hunger and occasionally cabbage.
We didn’t plan any of this.
But here we are.

How Hungry Songs Happened
Like many ideas that probably should have been reconsidered, this one started around a table.
Boil Me Gently found inspiration at Restaurant Relax among plates of pierogi, bowls of soup, gołąbki, Silesian dumplings and the everyday sounds coming from the kitchen.
One song became another. Then another.
Before anyone fully understood what was happening, there was an album.
The result was Hungry Songs — 18 tracks that wander between Polish food, folk music, cabaret and several languages, proving one surprisingly important point:
Hunger needs no translation.
The songs may be ridiculous, but the affection behind them is real. They celebrate the dishes people grow up with, remember, argue about, miss when they leave home and immediately recognize when they smell them again.
That part we understand very well.

Food Sounds Better

Restaurant Relax has always been about more than putting food on a plate.
Polish food carries memories with it — family kitchens, Sunday dinners, grandmothers, arguments over whose pierogi are better and recipes nobody seems to have written down properly.
Hungry Songs takes those memories somewhere unexpected.
Very unexpected.
So put on a song, order something good and enjoy the strange little world where Polish home cooking somehow became a soundtrack.
We still don’t know exactly how it happened.
But we’re glad it did.
Every good album deserves a rehearsal dinner.
