Local Roots
The Soul of Greenpoint
and the Philosophy of Patience
For nearly three decades, Restaurant Relax has remained a familiar part of Newel Street.
What began as a small neighborhood restaurant serving Greenpoint’s Polish community has grown into a destination for neighbors, New Yorkers and visitors looking for authentic Polish food in NYC.
Greenpoint has changed around us, but our kitchen has kept the same priorities: family recipes, fresh food and the patience to prepare it properly.
Our dining room brings together longtime Greenpoint residents, newcomers to the neighborhood, Polish families and visitors discovering Polish food for the first time. They may arrive for different reasons, but they often agree on one thing: good food should never be rushed.
Our Story:
Homemade Polish Cooking
Since 1997
Our family story began far from New York, in a small Polish village, in a kitchen where the day started at 4 a.m.
We still remember the sound of our grandmother’s wooden rolling pin moving slowly across the dough. She used to say:
“Everything must be done with patience, or it is not worth doing at all.”
That philosophy became part of Restaurant Relax.
Since 1997, we have been cooking the food we grew up with and staying true to the traditions of Polish home cooking. We serve honest meals made from scratch, following methods passed down through generations of our family.
The Craft of Comfort
At Restaurant Relax, handmade is not a marketing buzzword.
It is our standard.
Every pierogi is folded by hand. Every pot of bigos is given time to develop its flavor. Our Polish soups are prepared fresh and cooked slowly to create the deep, comforting taste that cannot come from a box or a shortcut.
Whether you order kotlet schabowy, traditional kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, crispy potato pancakes or a bowl of homemade soup, every dish receives the same care.
For us, Polish comfort food is about more than filling a plate. It is a connection to family, memory and a tradition that values quality over speed.
Beyond the Neighborhood:
The Jewel on Newel
What began as a local Greenpoint restaurant has become a place people travel across New York City to visit.
Some of our guests have even started calling Restaurant Relax “The Jewel on Newel.”
We regularly welcome visitors staying in Manhattan who cross the river for handmade pierogi, Polish soups and a quiet meal that feels far away from the rush of the city.
Hundreds of Google reviews have helped new guests discover Restaurant Relax, but our promise remains the same as it was in 1997:
Fresh ingredients.
Traditional methods.
Homemade Polish food.
And the patience to do it right.
Welcome to our table.
Experience the history of flavor at the only speed that actually tastes good.
Hurry slowly.
